| Buaiteoirí Chúige Uladh - Tráth na gCeist Gael Linn |
| Tráth na gCeist Gael Linn
D’éirigh le ceathrar dalta i mbliain 10 ó Ardscoil Iósaif Crois Mhic Lionnáin, daltaí a bhain an chéad bhabhta de Thráth na gCeist Gael Linn in Iúr Cinn Trá i mí na Samhna, Cluiche Ceannais Chúige Uladh a bhaint i Lorgain an tseachtain seo chaite. Bhí siad in iomaíocht leis na scoileanna ar fad eile a bhain a gcuid babhtaí réigiúnacha i gCúige Uladh agus d’éirigh thar barr leo nuair a bhain siad an chéad áit amach ar an lá. Tá a múinteoir, Bean Uí Ridley, iontach bródúil astu agus chuaigh sé i bhfeidhm go mór uirthi cé chomh dícheallach is a bhí siad agus iad ag ullmhú don tráth ceisteanna – is eiseamláirí iontacha iad do na daltaí óga sa scoil. Tá bua an eolas ginearálta acu gan amhras agus nuair a chuireann tú san áireamh go raibh orthu na ceisteanna a fhreagairt as Gaeilge, is éacht mór é. Dúirt an tUasal Ó Scalaí gur éacht iontach é don roinn Ghaeilge agus go raibh áthas mór air de thairbhe a mbua. ST. JOSEPH’S HIGH SCHOOL, CROSSMAGLEN Gael Linn Ulster Quiz Champions Gael Linn Quiz Four year 10 pupils from St. Joseph’s High school Crossmaglen who won the 1st round of the Gael Linn Quiz held in Newry in November went on the win the Ulster Final in Lurgan last week. Their teacher Mrs Ridley is very proud of them and impressed at their dedication and preparation for the quiz – they are an inspiration for all the younger pupils in the school. Their level of general knowledge is impressive and this combined with the fact that they had to answer the questions ‘as Gaeilge’ is indeed a great achievement. South Armagh Extended Schools provide evening of entertainment in St. Joseph’s Crossmaglen |
| St. Joseph’s High School Crossmaglen was the venue for a showcasing of music, drama and dance provided by the South Armagh Extended School Cluster. The South Armagh Extended Schools Cluster consists of the following schools: Anamar Primary, Clonalig Primary, St. Patrick’s Crossmaglen, St. Patrick’s Cullyhanna, St. Mary’s, Mullaghbawn , St. Brigid’s , Glassdrummond, St. Oliver’s, Carrickrovaddy and the lead school St. Joseph’s High School , Crossmaglen. The cluster co-ordinator is Mrs. Geraldine Cunningham, Head of Geography at St. Joseph’s High School. Pupils from these schools participated in Drama , Dance and Music workshops funded by the South Armagh Extended Schools Cluster, the results of which were showcased in an evening of entertainment last Tuesday 8th December. The week of October the 12th to 16th saw thirty five Primary school pupils participate in a fun and exciting initiative called ‘Rock Skool’. In conjunction with the fantastic tutors from ‘The Making Music Workshop’, pupils participated in a one week intensive course. This lasted daily for three hours after school. A band was formed and they in turn, composed, edited and recorded a song called ‘Tell Someone That You Trust’ The week of the 19th to 23rd of October saw fourteen post-primary pupils from : Abbey Grammar, Newry, St. Paul’s , Bessbrook, St. Colman’s College, Newry, Sacred Heart Grammar, Newry and St. Joseph’s High School, Crossmaglen participate collaboratively in ‘Rock Skool’. Two bands were formed and each band wrote the lyrics, composed the music and recorded their track. Their songs were entitled ‘Gone But Not Forgotten’ and ‘Christmas Song’. The pupils themselves performed the music for this final recording. The pupils were aided by some very experienced musicians including Linley Hamilton, John Wilson and Nicky Scott. Both ‘Rock Skool’ tracks were expertly edited by a sound engineer Simon Mc Bride. Each pupil, from both primary and secondary, was presented with a professionally packaged c.d. of their song . The cover of the c.d. was designed by Ryan Loye a year 9 student at St. Joseph’s High School. Saturday 28th November and 5th December saw forty primary school pupils participate in a six hour drama and dance workshop with the Drama company BEAM. The theme of the programme was safety. Pupils composed their own short pieces which they performed brilliantly on the night. The dance was accompanied by the track recorded by their peers called ‘Tell Someone That You Trust’. They also performed an excellent dance routine to the backing track ‘Jai Ho’. BEAM also worked with St. Joseph’s Drama department and this performance will be showcased at a later date. Mrs. Geraldine Cunningham, Extended Schools Coordinator said “It was amazing to see pupils after a long day at school, so enthused and enthralled by what they were doing. This event encapsulated the whole idea of extended schools and has certainly afforded these pupils an insight into the complexities of the music and drama industries.” The showcase was performed to a full hall and greatly appreciated by all.
